International patients

For anyone who travels, the organization matters as much as the treatment. These are the details: the airports, the days you need, what to bring, where to stay and what you pay at each point.

In numbers

What changes when the hospital is next to the airport.

  • 15 minfrom Cibao International Airport to the hospital, along the Duarte highway.Cibao International Airport (STI), Santiago; HEMA, Duarte highway, Puñal.
  • 72 hafter the procedure, the check and your flight home.Outpatient procedure under local anesthesia; discharged the same day.
  • Nonenights in hospital: you return to your hotel the same day, and the work-up is performed in the same building.Labs, cardiology and the procedure at HEMA, Santiago.
The airports

There are two airports, and a location near each one.

  1. STICibao International Airport, SantiagoDirect flights from New York, Miami and other U.S. cities. HEMA is about fifteen minutes away, on the Duarte highway, across from the Hodelpa hotel. It is the most practical option if you fly in.
  2. SDQLas Américas Airport, Santo DomingoIf you prefer the capital, Clínica Abreu, in Gazcue, is about 35 minutes away. Where it is best to perform it is decided with you at the evaluation.
The days

It is five or six days, counted from when you land.

  1. 01ArrivalYou land and settle in. If you have already sent us your studies, nothing else is needed that day.
  2. 02The pre-procedure work-upThe blood work and the cardiology check are performed at the hospital, fasting. If you do not yet have a biopsy, it is performed that same day.
  3. 03The procedureIt is performed under local anesthesia, takes about 45 minutes and you are discharged the same day. You return to your hotel that same afternoon.
  4. 04The check and your flightYou have a check with the doctor and, if all is in order, your flight home. Follow-up continues from your country.

If you arrive without a biopsy, the ablation is scheduled once your result is available and the plan changes; at the evaluation we decide with you how to organize it. The exact dates are given in writing.

Before you leave

What to bring and what you pay at each point.

What to bring

  • A valid passport.
  • Your studies, printed or on your phone: the ultrasound, the biopsy and the labs.
  • The list of medications you take. If you take blood thinners, you are told at the evaluation when to pause them.
  • Open-neck clothing for the day of the procedure.

What you pay and when

  • The virtual consultation, online, when you book it.
  • The procedure, on arrival, at the center, by card or in cash.
  • Flights, lodging and transfers are at your own expense and are not included in the written cost.

It is not necessary for someone to travel with you: the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and you return to your hotel the same day. Even so, company is usually comforting, and one companion is welcome at the consultation and at the center.

Where to stay

The hospital is across from the hotel.

HEMA is on the Duarte highway, in Puñal, across from the Hodelpa hotel. You can stay steps from the hospital and have the work-up, the procedure and the check without depending on transfers.

You book your own lodging. If you would like guidance on the area, the practice provides it when coordinating the dates.

About the trip

What people usually ask about the trip.

  • Citizens of the United States, Canada and most of Europe do not need a visa for the Dominican Republic; a valid passport is enough for stays under 30 days. It is worth confirming your own country's requirements before traveling.

  • It depends on your flight time: the blood work is performed fasting and cardiology has its own schedule. Usually it is performed the next day; the practice coordinates it with your itinerary.

  • It is not required: the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and you return to your hotel the same day. Even so, company is usually comforting, and one companion is welcome at the consultation and at the center.

  • You let us know and the work-up and the procedure are rescheduled. There is no advance payment to lose.

You can travel with everything already decided.

The virtual evaluation leaves you the plan, the dates and the cost in writing before you buy a flight.
